Meeting the Individual Needs of Students
Harris-Hillman is a public school serving students with multiple disabilities and dual diagnoses ages 3-22 years who live in Davidson County. A majority of our students require daily nursing care in order to attend school. This care is provided by nurses from the Metro Public Health Department. In addition, we have two pre-kindergarten programs serving 3 and 4 year old children with a variety of special needs as well as some students who are typically developing.
A highly trained and skilled staff of teachers, therapists, support teachers and paraprofessionals offer instruction designed to meet the individual needs of each student. Our programming emphasizes sensory stimulation, gross and fine motor development, acquisition of self-help skills and opportunities for socialization. We have developed a curriculum that provides students with exposure to grade level-appropriate content through literature and modified activities.
Additionally, our students participate in art, computer lab, music, physical education, community-based training, field trips, communication/language therapies, physical/occupational therapies, and vision/hearing services.
In short, we believe the students at Harris-Hillman are amazing. A majority of them have multiple disabilities that greatly impact their ability to be independent. Despite that fact, they all have very unique personalities that are nurtured and celebrated during their time here.
